Here is Largehearted-Boy’s list of new music releases for this week. I’ll be living all over the new discs by Black Mountain and Times New Viking.
This party I’m going to on Saturday night, where Thurston Moore is spinning wax, is going to be so rad that the most bourgeois music website ever mentioned it. They also mention Thurston's new NO WAVE book, but neglect to mention this one, which he edited last year.
Heidegger, poetry, silence.
Last year, when I saw Cat Power in Noho, she was introduced to the crowd as “the greatest living soul singer.” I puked immediately when these words hit my ears. The statement is such a weak one, so I will only remind you that this person is still alive and that when this person is sober she kills. But anyway, this morning I was happy to see that even the bourgeois press gave Cat Power’s new cover record a bad review. Announcers should introduce them as “just another cover band.”
Daytrotter posted a listenable/downloadable John Vanderslice session of tracks from 2007’s Emerald City. One of the four tracks John plays is “Parade,” which is my favorite on the album. Those of us in the Pioneer Valley are in for a great treat when this event happens in April.
The Mars Volta recently played Letterman. Cedric looks like he’s settled down a lot compared to when he and Omar were in one of the greatest bands to ever exist.
Willie Nelson’s guitar solo from Senor (Tales Of Yankee Power), which appeared on the I'm Not There soundtrack, is the best guitar solo EVER. I can imagine whoever was working the studio saying to Willie, “Do you want to fix that part?” And Willie just laughs and says, “What part?”
MP3 PARTY
Thurston Moore -- The Shape Is In A Trance
Cat Power --Metal Heart (a pre-cover band classic)
Stephen Malkmus -- Water And A Seat (live at Crystal Ballroom, 2005)
